When evaluating a lighting product, or any electrical product for that matter, we always check to make sure it passed a safety certification.  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) maintains a list of Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs), which ensures products meet the necessary standards to ensure their safety for the workplace and at home.  The largest of these NRTLs are UL and Intertek.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is an independent 3rd party organization that develops safety specifications and tests products to make sure they are safe for the public and in the workplace.

Intertek (ETL Listing) is another 3rd party organization that tests products to a wide variety of safety standards to ensure their safety for the public and workplace.  It is the most commonly recognized certification in the world.

ETL and UL sound almost the same—they should, since they test to the same standards.  But, the ETL certification is the fastest growing safety mark in North America—why?

Intertek goes beyond testing and inspecting products to custom tailoring their process and work with manufacturers to bring their products to market with a much faster turnaround time.  This means that new lighting products can enter the market faster before they have a chance to become out of date, which is key in a high growth field like LED Lighting.

What does this mean for you?  All Sigma Luminous products including our Panels and Troffers have UL certifications, while our Ballast Compatible T8 Tubes have the ETL certification.  You can rest easy knowing that they have the proper certifications.
